Independence Day is around the corner, which means BBQ, pool parties and of course, an evening of fireworks speckling through the night sky. But while we revel in celebration, our dogs are often experiencing anxiety. Lucy Postins, the founder of The Honest Kitchen, a family owned company that makes healthy, dehydrated pet foods, recognized the issues dog owners face on this holiday and has created a recipe to share with you that will help calm your pup’s nerves by using a very special ingedient; The Honest Kitchen’s Quiet Tea. Beau and I have not tried these, but I know the Honest Kitchen and they are a truly wonderful company…so I’m thinking we might be making we might be makin’ some meatballs on Wednesday morning
! If you try this recipie, please let us know how it worked at janine@luxurypaw.com.
These meat balls are exceedingly easy to make, and have the added benefit of helping to calm down pups who get anxious at big gatherings or the sound of firework displays. Turkey is naturally high in sedating Tryptophan, and the Quiet Tea is a blend of herbs that will infuse each meatball with calming, soothing properties to help July 4th pass by with a little less stress.
1 cup hot water or hot organic free range chicken broth
1 cup of Honest Kitchen Preference® dehydrated dog food
2 tbsp of ground Flaxseed
1 ½ lb of ground Turkey (raw or sautéed depending what you’re comfortable with)
2 cups full fat Plain Yogurt
- Steep the Quiet Tea in the hot water or broth in a large bowl, and set aside.
- Measure out the Preference into a separate bowl and add the flaxseed.
- Add the tea to the Preference to rehydrate it.
- Mix in the ground turkey, then add the coconut oil, and stir to mix thoroughly.
- Roll into meatballs, then roll each meatball in yogurt, and top with coconut flakes and a couple of banana slices.
- Refrigerate, and take out when you’re ready to serve!

Curtesy of Braxton’s Animal Works… Heading to the NJ Shore with your pet for the 4th of July? Be aware the new NJ dog car safety statute 4:22-18 includes a “click-it-or ticket” law for animals who are unrestrained in vehicles. This means that owners, who do not have their dog secured with a seat belt or place their cats and dogs in a carrier that is buckled down, can be stopped by the police or animal control officers and issued tickets for $250 to $1,000 per animal.
The law is due to a fatal accident that was caused by a dog that jumped into the lap of the driver and blocked his vision.
If you need help purchasing a seat belt for a dog or carrier for your pet, visit Braxton’s and speak with an associate.

This article is from the Costa Rica Star…
I’d never traveled with a celebrity before. When we arrived at the airport in Costa Rica, it was a madhouse. People kept coming up to take pictures with my companion. Customs officials rushed us through the line after a cursory check of our documents. Baggage handlers competed to grab our luggage. It got to be a bit much when a police officer stalked over determinedly as we waited outside for our rental car to be delivered. “All our documents are in order, right?” I thought to myself nervously as he reached us and then stooped down to give the “celebrity” a scratch under the chin… and then asked me to take a picture with his cell phone. The celebrity in question, if you haven’t guessed, is not human. It’s my silver-haired standard poodle. And thanks to a trip to the groomer just before we boarded the plane in Miami, Jester was quite a sight when we arrived at our new home in Costa Rica. Read the full article HERE.
